The draft version of the Nahoon Mouth and Sports Precinct Local Spatial Development Strategy was presented to a gathering of Nahoon stakeholders at a public participation meeting on 18 May 2009. The draft document may be downloaded here.

The strategy, which was covered briefly in the Daily Dispatch last week, puts forward a conceptual framework for the responsible development of specific parcels of land in Nahoon.  Several of these areas are classified as “Highly Sensitive”.

35 teachers in the Ukhahlamba District of the Eastern Cape participated in a workshop on 6 May that introduced three new lesson plans into the curriculum.

Developed by the Ukhahlamba District Municipality (with a little help from Intengu), the lesson plans focus on educating Grade 9 learners in the biodiversity of the area and the sensitivity of the environment. more…

The Elundini Livestock Improvement Programme has steadily been increasing the quality of life in the rural Eastern Cape, simply by increasing small-scale farmers’ access to essential knowledge and medicines.

How does one go about making real, tangible differences in the lives of the rural poor? It’s a question that lies at the very heart of development in the Eastern Cape, a province that is often characterised as rural and underdeveloped, and which various stakeholders have attempted to answer in a wide variety of ways.

One of our clients, the Elundini Livestock Improvement Programme, seems to have hit on at least one solution: give small-scale farmers affordable access to livestock medicines and the expertise to use them.

The suburb of Mdantsane has had to live with what some termed as offensive names, since its establishment.  This is soon to be a thing of the past. Navigation in South Africa’s second-largest township is a task, even to residents. Streets, more often than not, lack any kind of identification, houses are numbered seemingly randomly and neighbourhoods have little to differentiate them from each other. According to Dr Lesley-Ann Foster, Executive Director of the Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre in East London, the trafficking of women and girls in South Africa is on the increase and likely to escalate leading up to 2010.

The Masimanyane Women’s Support Centre hosted a conference in East London on 25 and 26 March to explore themes around the trafficking of women and children. Many experts across all sectors of society were invited to participate in an array of discussions about human trafficking and sexual exploitation. more…
